
The first phase of the Overworld Overhaul is improving the stealth gameplay. Our goal with changes to the Overworld is to make gameplay outside battles more dynamic and strategic, and overall more fun over a longer period of time. The system currently in place for the Overworld is mainly just an avenue to get from one battle to the next. The next is Pilot Progression, and the last is Polish/Preparing for Steam. There are 3 “seasons” of updates left, as we’ve been referring to them.

That said, work for both combat and the economy is not entirely complete yet, so you can still look forward to more additions and tweaks as we carry on. This included the workshop, crafting, different scenario types, new maps, and more. Once we felt combat was in a solid spot, we began reworking post-battle salvage, and making improvements to the economy. We’ve also added different damage types, enemy types, maps, scenarios, cutscenes, weather, and added a lot of visual and audio polish. We’ve added a ton of different weapons, like melee weapons, rail guns, beam weapons – the whole shebang. So far, this has mainly encompassed combat and mech customization – the things that comprise the meat of the game. We had the scaffolding prepared, and what we’ve been doing since is going through each of the systems and fleshing them out. When we initially launched in early access one year ago, we had the bare bones of the game in place.

So while we can’t tell you when Phantom Brigade will hit 1.0, we can share the rest of our plans and what to expect for Phantom Brigade’s full launch. We have a general idea, but at this point, we would rather wait until we know a timeline for sure rather than give an arbitrary date and end up disappointing fans if we have to keep pushing it back. Unfortunately, we don’t feel comfortable giving a timeline yet. When is Phantom Brigade’s 1.0 coming? So… when is 1.0? We’d like to take a moment to address the mech in the room. A year of development has already flown by, and our exclusive early access period with Epic Games is over at the end of the month. Alex Connolly of called the game "what we've all been pining for since Square Enix dropped the ball by a) not officially releasing Front Mission 5: Scars of the War in the West and b) allowing Front Mission Evolved to be, well, Front Mission Evolved".Hey Brigadiers. Saying that "god dammit, I want more mech strategy games", he called Phantom Brigade the highlight of the PAX West 2019 show. Mike Williams of USgamer stated that he initially compared the game to Front Mission due to its turn-based gameplay, a comparison that the developers agreed with. Luke Plunkett of Kotaku compared the game to a hybrid of XCOM and MechWarrior Tactics, saying that it "looks amazing" and that he was "excited to see how this giant mechanical ballet looks after a few more months". The game features procedural damage for both the environment and mechs (based on direction). She stated that while she found games like Front Mission 4 to be "hype" in their cutscenes, the gameplay was "very much traditional turn-based". The game's developers decided that the game would not be fully turn-based and play out in real time, in order to "capture that energy you get in a mech anime but have that actually be the gameplay", according to the game's creative lead and designer, Adelaide Jenkins. The game was first announced at PAX West 2017. The player can predict what happens during these turns and set up moves that then play out in real time. The game plays out in a semi-real-time manner with turns being separated into segments of a few seconds each.

The premise of the game is that the player commands a squad of mechs who obtained a secret prototype weapon that lets them see briefly into the future. Initially in early access on Epic Games Store since November 2020, the full game was released on February 28, 2023.
